Let me be clear – rest will rescue you from burnout but it won’t stop it from happening again and again. How do I know? I’ve been there – numerous times. When I look back, it’s easy for me to recognize the signs and symptoms leading up to it but it’s so hard to take a step back from the present to take stock of our surroundings. Everyone will tell you to take some time to rest, invest in self-care (which is vital!), and do things for yourself when you take “me” time … but maybe those people haven’t ever been burnt out.
Rest helps.
Self-care helps.
“Me” time helps.
But none of it prevents you from burning out again. So while they’re all vital to your daily functioning life, they won’t stop the process from repeating itself.
The Pursuit of Productivity & Burnout
As humans, we’re always pushing ourselves to do more, be better, and be faster than anyone and everyone. We want to be the very best version of ourselves that we can possibly be but it’s exhausting. It’s also why rest and self-care alone won’t stop the cycle of burnout. As we push ourselves to be more productive, the pursuit of productivity becomes all-consuming and it’s one of the hardest things to overcome on the road to burnout recovery. Self-care can help but it will really only mask the cracks of burnout. So, what’s the cure? What stops burnout from repeating itself?
