As therapists, it is almost ingrained in our minds to think that the best way to scale our financial wealth is to offer more sessions. However, what happens when we have no more hours in the day to give? When we have a full client load, packed to the brim with sessions and meetings, and teetering on that fine line of burnout? That is precisely when it is time to pivot, to broaden the horizons of our income streams, and to try something new. Diversifying the ways you bring in revenue is not nearly as intimidating as it sounds. Not only will it bring more financial stability, but it will also provide more balance to your life and help you avoid the dreaded burnout. Relying solely on client sessions to help you grow financially is pretty much a fast track straight to burnout.
Why share your knowledge?
The demand for therapists to share their expertise across various sectors of our communities is growing rapidly, and we can capitalize on that. In corporate settings, for example, therapists can serve as invaluable consultants, enhancing workplace communication, promoting mental well-being, and fostering a healthier organizational culture. Schools, too, stand to gain significantly by having therapists on staff to consult with teachers, offering much-needed guidance on supporting student mental health and creating safer, more inclusive learning environments. Additionally, therapists play a crucial role in developing effective mental health programs that benefit both individuals and entire communities.
The spaces where therapists can contribute their knowledge and skills are vast, spanning from education and corporate environments to broader community initiatives. Their expertise is invaluable in fostering healthier, more productive environments in every corner of society.
Now, let’s explore some applicable ways to diversify your income:
1. Create and Sell Online Course:
One effective way to do this is by creating and selling online courses. This allows you to share your knowledge and expertise with other therapists or even entrepreneurs who are looking to enhance their skills. You can cover specific topics, such as “How to Be Audit Ready” (attach link), or something broader that addresses essential skills, like “How to Effectively Communicate within Professional Relationships.” These are topics where, as a therapist, you can bring a unique perspective to the table, shedding light in a different and valuable way.
2. Host Therapeutic Retreats:
So many people are looking for a reset to their daily lives. We are all flooded and overwhelmed with the world around us at different points in our lives. Keeping that in mind and then finding people who need something that you can offer is absolutely key. For me, I am a neurodivergent entrepreneur who has successfully scaled my business while balancing everything. I offer retreats for other neurodivergent entrepreneurs because I deeply understand the challenges they face every day. If you find yourself struggling with similar issues, please check out my upcoming retreat to Spain in 2025 (attach link). There are still spots open, but they tend to fill up rather quickly! I would absolutely love to see you there. It is a space where you can feel that your differences are celebrated and no longer shamed. It is so crucial to me that you walk away with a new way of viewing yourself, and I promise, YOU WILL! Hosting a retreat can not only be beneficial for diversifying your income, but it also provides you and those who attend with the opportunity to develop in your personal being and heal in a deeper way.
3. Develop Digital Products and Tools:
This is another great way to apply all your experience and expertise effectively. Sitting down to create a digital product, such as a masterclass, presentation, worksheets, or even other types of resources, is an efficient and effective way to spread your knowledge and also earn passive income. Initially, it will take some legwork to compile everything you know and then break it down into categories that you feel would be the most useful for your audience. However, once you complete that initial work, it becomes relatively hands-off after that. Developing digital products and tools is a wonderful way to profit off what you already know! I highly recommend you take as much time as necessary to ensure that the materials you are creating hold true value and authentically represent who you are. Quality and authenticity are what will drive you farther than anything else when it comes to making an impact in the digital space.
4. Create a Subscription-Based Community:
Lastly, consider creating a monthly subscription where your members pay to be a part of an exclusive community. This is another fantastic way you can scale your income. It is important to note that, for this to be successful, it must be crystal clear to your audience what they will gain from joining this community. This is where you can share all the tips and tricks that you have learned over the years—the ones that have made you more efficient or helped you enjoy certain aspects of your workload more. The secrets you normally wouldn’t share. When deciding what content will be shared in this exclusive community, remind yourself often that the takeaway needs to be clear. That is how you gain members and, importantly, keep them.
Feeling Stuck Reading This?
If, while reading this, you find yourself feeling stuck and unable to even begin to tap into what would align with you, or what it might mean to add more onto your plate, I think it may be time that you give yourself a much-needed break. Whether that is doing your favorite activity, unplugging from the world for a rejuvenating weekend, or joining me in Spain for what promises to be an amazing retreat, you need to do something that ensures you are filling your cup and not letting the burnout carry on too long. We want to make sure that burnout is just a blip in our lives, not the whole picture. Your body, your mind, and your soul do not benefit from you continuing the same cycles you know are hurting you. So please, for yourself, both now and in the future, take the time to reset if you need to. It may seem like you don’t even have the time for that, but it is time—time to make time.
Embracing new opportunities for growth can be scary, daunting, and overwhelming. My best advice is to sit down with yourself and evaluate what your options are. Once you can identify that, take the time to make sure it aligns with you and your business. Then start breaking it down into bite-sized pieces. Turn those pieces into achievable goals that have specific dates and deadlines. Hold yourself accountable and keep going. You have so much more in you than you think, but the only way to pull it out of you is to have the discipline to do so. There is someone out there looking for exactly what you have to offer! Knowledge is power, and it is even more powerful when we share it with one another.
